Gauges: How to Safely Increase the Size of Your Piercing Using Stretching Kits

Many people want to stretch their piercings so that they can fit higher gauge jewelry into them. This is a process that can take a long time, so the most important thing you need to remember to do is to be patient. There are many stretching kits that will allow you to safely stretch your piercing from a normal 20 gauge piercing to a larger 0 gauge or 8 mm. Be sure to pay attention to what your body is telling you. If you stretch too quickly, you could damage your skin, create scar tissue, and make stretching in the future much more difficult.

The stretching kits will include stainless steel tapers and you want to make sure they have been sterilized before you begin. You can also soak your earlobe in warm water to increase circulation and relax the tissue. It is also helpful to lubricate the taper with Vaseline or liquid soap.

Begin by pushing the taper into the piercing until you feel slight resistance. Inhale slowly and as you exhale, push the taper through the piercing until about 1cm is left. It is normal to feel slight pain or a burning sensation, and there should certainly be some resistance.

Typically, you should wait at least 1 to 2 weeks for your piercing to heal for the first few tapers. It may take 3 to 4 weeks for your piercing to heal for the larger tapers. Keep in mind that these time periods are subjective. For specific information about your piercing, consult your piercer and ask what they would recommend.
